India replied to South Africa's first innings total of 265 by reaching 165-4 (56 overs) at tea on the second day of the third and final Test at Kanpur.

VVS Laxman top-scored for the Indians with a 50 after Morne Morkel pegged back the Indians with two back to back wickets after lunch. The tall fast bowler, who had earlier got rid of opener Wasim Jaffer (15) also accounted for Rahul Dravid (29) and Laxman.
